BILIRUBIN

Substance with a yellowish color, derived from the degradation of red blood cells. Bilirubin circulates in the blood in the free form (indirect bilirubin) or conjugated to certain proteins (direct bilirubin). It may be increased in certain diseases that affect the liver. Usually, direct, indirect and total bilirubin levels are measured from blood samples.
