MUCOSITIS

Inflammation of the mucous membranes, which constitute the lining tissue of various structures of the human body. Mucositis occurs most often in organs of the digestive system, including the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, rectum, and anal canal. It is an adverse event that can be related to chemotherapy or radiation therapy.

Mucositis can be alleviated with medical procedures and adequate nutrition, and the prevention of fungal infection may also be indicated. In some cases, it may be necessary to reduce the chemotherapy dose and/or temporarily stop chemotherapy or radiation therapy. In general, this side effect improves significantly over the course of a few weeks after treatment ends.
