NEOPLASIA

Any abnormal and uncontrolled proliferation of cells, which results in a benign or malignant tumor. The neoplasm originates from a single type of cell, as a result of the mutation of its genes. However, throughout the evolution of a neoplasm, it is common to find more than one type of cell, due to the occurrence of new mutations. Malignant neoplasms are also known as cancer.
