GERICO is a randomized phase 3 trial, carried out in Danish hospitals with patients over 70 years of age, diagnosed with colorectal cancer, with a life expectancy of more than three months and considered vulnerable according to geriatric screening-8 (G8).

Among the 142 subjects included, 58% received adjuvant treatment and 42% were treated with first-line palliative chemotherapy. Interventions included medication changes (62%), nutritional therapy (51%) and physical therapy (39%). More interventional patients completed scheduled chemotherapy compared with controls (45% versus 28%). Quality of life improved in patients undergoing interventional procedures compared to controls, with a decreased burden of disease and better mobility.

“Elderly patients are a heterogeneous group, with fit to frail people, with several comorbidities and variable tolerance to chemotherapy”, says clinical oncologist Bárbara Sodré, from Oncoclínicas Rio de Janeiro. Therefore, the objective of the study was to assess whether these more vulnerable patients who underwent the comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) are able to complete the proposed chemotherapy treatment, compared to those who do not go through this follow-up protocol.

“This is a very promising study, as it shows how a multidisciplinary approach can help the treatment of cancer patients, which by nature is already a complex process, and when regarding the elderly, it is even more difficult to perform”, says João Paulo Fogacci, clinical oncologist at Oncoclínicas Rio de Janeiro.
