Recent advances in therapeutic alternatives for patients with more aggressive skin cancer, such as stage III cutaneous melanoma or metastatic melanoma with mutated BRAF, were highlighted in the Skin panel of the 8th International Oncoclínicas Symposium, held this year in a virtual way. In grade III melanoma, the last five years have seen intense incorporation of new treatment options, including targeted therapy and immunotherapy. The module coordinator, Rodrigo Perez Pereira, clinical oncologist at Oncoclínica Porto Alegre (RS), highlights a recent period of many advances in the area, with a significant improvement in the prognosis of patients. “There have been at least four or five years of important approvals in the treatment of patients with stage III melanoma, including immunotherapy and targeted therapy”, he comments, adding that, since 2015, at least three important treatment options have been incorporated into clinical practice – two in immunotherapy and one in targeted therapy.
