Pediatric Oncology

Pediatric oncology is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of tumors and cancers in children and adolescents up to 18 years of age. The pediatric oncologist is the physician who will establish the proper treatment for each patient.

Until the mid-1970s, children and adolescents with cancer received the same treatment as adults, despite having very different biological and organic characteristics. Today, the scenario is quite different, which is why more successful results have been seen.

Compared with those of adults, childhood tumors are much more aggressive and evolve with greater speed, because they affect a human being in formation. On the other hand, the response to therapies is usually much faster, which makes most cases of childhood cancer curable, as long as there is an early diagnosis and the child is promptly referred to specialized treatment centers. The results obtained in Brazil are on par with those of the best oncology institutes in the world.

The pediatric oncologist is responsible for planning and treating the patient aged 0 to 21 years.

The pediatric oncologists of the Oncoclínicas Group work together and are integrated into multidisciplinary teams, which are formed by surgeons, radiotherapists, pathologists, hematologists, nurses, psychologists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, among other professionals.

Based on the involvement and sharing of the integrated actions of these teams, we offer comprehensive, complete and totally individualized care, which respects the needs and life history of each patient.
