Treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck often significantly affects the patient’s quality of life. However, researchers are continually looking for less toxic approaches and are keen to adopt rehabilitation and psychosocial care strategies.

Gustavo Costa Baumgratz Lopes, an oncologist at Oncocentro Belo Horizonte, a Grupo Oncoclínicas clinic in Minas Gerais, warns that there is still no population screening program that is considered beneficial for head and neck neoplasms: “Awareness campaigns such as ‘Julho Verde ‘, launched by the Brazilian Society of Head and Neck Surgery (SBBCP), try to bring information so that the diagnosis can be made with the first symptoms “.

For early-stage tumors, treatment usually consists of surgery or radiotherapy alone. However, advanced tumors will require surgery followed by radiotherapy with or without chemotherapy. Or they will be treated with concomitant chemoradiotherapy. “Speaking specifically of radiotherapy, during treatment it is common to have a decrease or even loss of taste, the appearance of canker sores in the oral cavity, as well as reports of discomfort, difficulty or pain in swallowing certain foods”, reports Diego Chaves Rezende Morais, radio-oncologist at Radioterapia Recife, a clinic belonging to Grupo Oncoclínicas in Pernambuco.

Due to these and other complications, the doctors discussed the importance of multidisciplinary treatment and the use of new and more modern technologies.
