Infectology

Infectology is the medical specialty that deals with the study of infectious diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. Among the most frequent problems are HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections (syphilis, recurrent herpes labial or genital herpes, HPV, etc), diseases transmitted by animals (arboviruses, rickettsiae, etc.), recurrent urinary infections, osteomyelitis (bone infection) and some cases of pneumonia and tuberculosis.

The specialist should also be consulted by people traveling to infectious disease endemic locations for guidance, preventive recommendations, and vaccinations for people of any age.

Unlike many medical specialties, in which the work is restricted to a certain part of the body, infectology addresses a wide range of diseases of all organs and systems of the organism, starting from a procedural paradigm (infection) and not anatomical as custom.

INFECTOLOGY X CANCER

In cancer treatment, the infectologist plays an important role. Infections are the main complications related to both cancer and chemotherapy. The infectious disease specialist is responsible for choosing and administering antibiotics, improving the quality of life of this patient and assisting in his recovery.

Some other actions of the infectious disease physician in helping cancer treatment include: clinical management of outpatient oncology patients affected by acute or chronic infectious processes, preemptive treatment of viruses and fungi, management of febrile neutropenia in patients with solid tumors and hematological, immunobiological and risk of infection in cancer patients, differential diagnosis of infectious/onco-hematological processes in a patient with neoplasia, patient assessment before immunosuppressive therapy/special immunobiologicals, recommended prophylaxis in patients before and after immunosuppressive therapy/special immunobiologicals.
